چکیده

This paper presents the successful demonstration of a large-stroke, high-precision inchworm microactuator. The actuator is capable of zero-power latching, or forcibly maintaining its position by using pre-stressed spring load. The actuator is driven by a combination of a PZT-stack actuator unit for slider thrust and electrostatic comb-drive units for slider grip. Incremental step size is precisely adjustable to the tens of nanometers level by controlling the PZT-stack actuator voltage. The observed minimum step size was 59 nm/cycle. Large stroke is obtained by repeating the operation sequence numerous times. A large-stroke actuation exceeding 600 μm has been demonstrated. There is no conceivable limit to the stroke except for the length of the slider and external load. (Some figures in this article are in colour only in the electronic version)

A low volume electrostatic inchworm microactuator with high-resolution and large force

A novel electrostatic inchworm microactuator, which employs both a built-in mechanical transformation and a large number of contraction units to generate large force and sub-micrometer resolution step, is presented. The actuator is fabricated in a single polysilicon device layer using a trench isolation technology. The entire actuator, including the clamps and the contraction element, fits in a...

Single Crystal Silicon MEMS Microactuator for High Density Hard Disk Drive

A single crystal silicon MEMS microactuator for high density hard disk drives is described in this paper. The microactuator is located between a slider and a suspension, and drives the slider on which a magnetic head is attached. The MEMS actuator is fabricated by improved LISA process. It has an electrically isolated 20:1 (40μm thick, 2μm width) high aspect ratio structure directly processed f...

The Design and Fabrication of Capillary Force Microactuators for Deformable Mirrors

Adaptive optics (AO) is a revolutionary technology that enhances the quality of astronomical images by correcting aberrations in them caused by atmospheric turbulence and distortions in the primary mirrors of large telescopes. The technology relies on manipulating arrays of microactuator devices mounted behind a deformable secondary mirror to correct errors in wave-fronts of incoming light. Cur...

Fluidic switching in nanochannels for the control of Inchworm: a synthetic biomolecular motor with a power stroke.

Synthetic molecular motors typically take nanometer-scale steps through rectification of thermal motion. Here we propose Inchworm, a DNA-based motor that employs a pronounced power stroke to take micrometer-scale steps on a time scale of seconds, and we design, fabricate, and analyze the nanofluidic device needed to operate the motor. Inchworm is a kbp-long, double-stranded DNA confined inside ...

New Inchworm type Actuator with I/Q heterodyne Interferometer Feedback for a Long Stroke Precision Stage

The precision stage is an essential device for optic fiber assembly systems, micro machines and semiconductor equipments. A new piezoelectric inchworm type actuator is proposed to implement an actuator-integrated long-stroke linear stage. An in-and-quadrature phase (I/Q) heterodyne interferometer is developed as a feedback sensor of a servo system, and a synchronized counting method is proposed...
